On June 1st Roodhals Capital hosted a Market Place Lending event with executives of Dutch lending platforms, international investors, asset managers and banks. We thank all attendees and speakers for the lively discussions. The event kicked off with a private viewing of the fabulous art at the Mauritshuis museum, where the conference was staged. Against that backdrop, the participants considered developments in, among others, consumer credit, SME and commercial real estate financing. Here are some of the highlights:
Discrepancy between local lending conditions and yield expectations in the international capital markets is particularly noticeable in the Netherlands. Returns on SME and CRE loans appear markedly higher in other EU countries and the UK. Lenders were quick to point out that APRs have been increasing and that credit costs remain benign in The Netherlands.
Anecdotally, some investors note that Dutch institutional investors sometimes provide capital to lending platforms at lower rates than the yields they require from credit funds. That’s a conundrum since credit funds are a major source of funding for marketplace lenders.
Some participants shared their view that the Dutch regulatory regime is tighter than EU rules prescribe. While that may have its merits in preventing credit losses, the congregation discussed the need for a level playing field. Level in both the international arena as when compared to lighter regulated credit products such as buy-now-pay-later or private lease.
